Subject: Local 1000 UR SUR grievance
Please find attached a copy of our grievance forwarded to the Employer on January 12, 2009. We have yet to receive a response.
During the last negotiations, the Employer dangled a new UR/SUR class to get support from Local 1000 Lars who thought they might have a better chance for higher pay and promotion. What actually happened is that URs have been frozen at a wage that is less than they would have received under the LRR class in the old contract.
As we reported in November, the Employer demoted five Local 1000 URs because, although their supervisors agreed they were qualified to go to the seventh step of the UR wage scale, the Chief of Staff over-ruled them. Four of these URs lost over $300/mo.just before the holidays, and their pay is now $200 mo. lower than it would be at the top step of labor relations representative class. This grievance is under appeal.
Since Local 1000 has not established any procedure for URs to be promoted to the higher SUR class and since only two URs have been promoted in the last two years, we have filed another all-affected grievance.
It states that unless any UR at the top of the scale specifically states in writing that he or she isn’t qualified or that he or she otherwise doesn’t want a promotion and higher pay, that UR shall be promoted to the SUR pay scale.
After all, in the absence of a procedure and uniform application, it is just as logical for the default to be a promotion, rather than a blanket denial.
When our members voted to ratify the last contract, they thought they would have the opportunity for higher pay, not lower pay.
We will keep you informed of progress on these grievances.

Subject: New URO/SURO grievance
By this communication, the union is filing a new grievance at the third level. The grievance is over the de facto failure of Local 1000 to implement the SURO classification. The requested remedy is automatic advancement and promotion by time in grade unless the SURO designation and pay are specifically waived by the employee. The date of submission and signing is today, 1/12/09.
Please contact me to set up a meeting time.

Subject: FW: UAW UR PAY CUT GRIEVANCE
Hi Auto Workers–
The Grinch is already afoot, what with Arnold’s “Dear Valued State
Worker’ letter effectively proposing a 5% pay cut .
Unfortunately five SEIU Local 1000 organizers, fresh from their hard
work on the election, got their own notice of a cut in pay.
In the last negotiations, the Employer dangled the UR/SUR deep class by
Local 1000 LRRs to promise them they would have greater promotional and
salary opportunities if they voted for the contract. Unfortunately in
two years only one person has been promoted and while there are a number
of lead positions, there are less seniors now than there were before!
Please read the attached grievance filed by UAW Local 2350. We hope
that this matter can be worked out for our coworkers, each of whom was
assured by their managers that their pay was correct.
In solidarity,
Lois Kugelmass, President
